Carly Hyland is an Assistant Professor of Cooperative Extension with UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, Division of Environmental Health Sciences. Carly uses mixed-methods and community-engaged research methods aimed at characterizing and mitigating the health impacts of climate change among agricultural and food systems workers.
Carly completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at Carthage College in Wisconsin (2015) and her MS in Global Health and Environment (2017) and PhD in Environmental Health Sciences (2021) in the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. She did her postdoc with Cynnie Curl at Boise State from 2021-2023, where she led research examining pesticide exposure and risk perceptions among men and women Latinx farmworkers.
Carly returned to Berkeley in July 2023, where she has worked with students and community groups on projects such as examining pesticide exposure and barriers to protection among pregnant farmworkers; examining farmworkers’ experiences working during wildfires, gaps in protection, and potential implications of the “Ag Pass” program in Sonoma County; and identification of farmworker-informed interventions to mitigate extreme heat in the San Joaquin Valley. Examples of current outreach efforts include hosting townhalls with farmworkers and working with local organizations to develop videos in Spanish to connect farmworkers with resources (e.g., access to health clinics, protection against retaliation).
