Moncerrat Hernández

Undergraduate Student

Moncerrat Hernández (she/her/ella) is an undergraduate student studying Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. She was raised in Oxnard, California, an agricultural community on the Central Coast, and is the daughter of former farmworkers, with family members who continue to work in agriculture. As a member of the Mixtec community, her identity and lived experiences shape her commitment to advancing environmental health equity and supporting the dignity, health, and safety of Indigenous and migrant farmworker communities.

Hernández is an undergraduate researcher in the Environmental Health Sciences Division under Dr. Carly Hyland. Her work centers on understanding occupational and environmental health risks among agricultural workers through community-engaged research. She has contributed to the evaluation of Sonoma County’s Ag Pass program by conducting farmworker surveys and analyzing data to assess impacts on worker safety and health. She has also supported the San Joaquin Valley Heat Project, where she helped develop and implement survey tools to examine heat mitigation practices among farmworkers and facilitated Spanish- and Mixteco-language focus groups on pesticide safety training and knowledge retention. In addition, she has examined pesticide exposure among pregnant farmworkers and supported culturally responsive research and participant engagement. Her research interests include climate-related occupational health, pesticide exposure, and advancing equitable, community-centered approaches to environmental health.

Outside of her academic and research work, Hernández enjoys exploring new coffee shops, spending time with her family, taking long walks, and traveling.
